Description

In this lesson students will be introduced to the future perfect and future continuous and be provided with ample practice time for this.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To enable students to understand and use the future perfect and future continuous and provide practice for this in the context of making plans.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To practice students skills of listening for gist and detail.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

To start of the lesson students will be presented with following questions introducing them to the topic of the lesson „Making Plans“: Do you meet up with your friends often? Is it hard to find a time to meet up? Why / why not? After modeling one or two students will be asked to answer the questions in Open Class.

Exposure (4-5 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Students will be played an audio of two people trying to arrange a time to meet up containing the target language and will be given three questions to answer while listening to it that will concern the gist and some minor details of the audio to check their understanding: 1. Do you think Mike is happy in his job? Why / Why not? 2. Why is Rob calling him? 3. Why is Mike going to Southampton next Wednesday? Afterwards students will be presented with an answer key to check their answers.

Highlighting (3-5 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

The students will listen to the audio again and will be asked to listen specifically for what Rob and Mike are telling each other about the future and take some notes. Then they will be asked to share the sentences they wrote down with the class.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Now students will be shown two sentence pairs and the form of the target language will be elicited from them. Afterwards the meaning of the target language will be explained with the help of time lines and two of the introduced sentences will be practiced in regards to the pronunciation. Here there will be a focus on the „dark l“ in the contraction of will, as well as eliciting sentence stress from the students. Choral drilling will follow before there will be one or two individual drills per sentence.

Controlled Practice (5-8 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Students will now be presented with a gap fill where they will need to fill in the correct verb forms either in future continuous or in future perfect. They will be asked to screenshot this and be put in BoR to complete it together for 4 mins. After the BoR they will be presented with an answer key to check their answers.

Free Practice (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Students will now be asked to think about following questions: Think about your life one year from now! What will you be doing? What will you have done? They will get 2 minutes to think about this and take notes. After that they will be put in BoR in groups of three to talk about this and ask each other questions for 6 mins. After coming back from the BoR feedback on content and language will be given to the students.
