Description

In this lesson, the students will read about the statue of liberty. They will learn some interesting facts and the history of it.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist, scan and detailed reading practice using a text about the statue of liberty in the context of historical sights/monuments.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification and review of new words in the context of the lesson.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-8 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

In pairs, ask each other: 1. Have you been to any historical places recently? 2. What historical place/monument would you like to visit? 3. Is there a place that you would recommend in Guangdong province?

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

1. Go through the text and underline/make a list of the words you do not know. 2. Translate the words and know their meanings. 3. Share your list with your partner and see if they have a different one. 4. Read some of the words to your teacher.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (15-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

1. Read for gist, what is this text about? 2. Give the text a suitable title. 3. Read the multiple choice questions 1-5. 4. Read for details. 5. Get back to the questions and choose the correct ones! 6. Share your answers with the teacher.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (12-15 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

1. In pairs, read the next five multiple-choice questions. 2. Get back to the text and read for more specific details. 3. Choose the correct answers. 4. Share your answers with the teacher.

Post-Reading/Listening (12-15 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

1. In pairs, answer the extended response section. 2. Compare your answers with another pair. 3. Discuss your answers with the teacher.
