TP 7 _ Writing _ Viktoria Kolb
Upper Intermediate level

Description

In this lessons students will be introduced to how to write a report and will be given the opportunity to write their own reports for practice.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To enable students to write reports using the correct structure and adequate vocabulary to do so.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To practice students skills in reading for gist by identifying the different parts of a report.
  • To practice students skills in reading for detail by identifying language used in the report, e.g. for generalizing.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Students will first be asked following questions: Do you eat meat? How often do you eat meat? And do you think we should stop eating meat? After a model is given by answering these questions, one or two students will be asked to answer the question in open class.

Exposure (5-7 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

Students will be provided with a sample report on why Americans have cut back on their meat consumption. (Based on a survey by Statista) They will be asked to read the report and to match the stages of the report (Headline, Introduction, Body & Conclusion) to the report. After that they will be presented with the solution to check. They will then be presented with a slide illustrating the structure of a report again and asked to screenshot it for later use.

Useful Language (5-6 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

The students will now be shown the report again with some phrases already underlined and asked to match them to three different categories: - phrases which generalize - words or phrases which come before examples - words or phrases emphasizing that an opinion belongs to a particular person or group They will do this on their own before they will be presented with the answers in a compiled form.

Productive Task(s) (18-20 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Students will now be given a prompt to write their own reports (in word, google docs. etc.): Write a report on how public transport facilities in the area you live in could be improved. (e.g. AC in the buses, more bus lines, build an underground system, renovate train stations etc.) For this they will have 8 minutes of time. After this they will be split into BoR and asked to share their reports with each other. (Sharing their screen) And give feedback to each other. For this they will have 5 minutes. If there is sufficient time they will change partners once and do the same again. During this monitoring will take place.

Feedback and Error Correction (5-7 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

One or two students will be asked to share what their partner wrote in their report. (feedback on content) After this some phrases / errors taken down during monitoring will be presented to the students and corrected with them by eliciting answers from them.
