The Big Day

Description

In this lesson, sts will concentrate on expressing themselves. They will be speaking most of the 45 minutes. The lesson will start with some pictures of weddings of different part of the world as a warm up activity. Then sts. will enter the listening activity. Pictures and flash cards will be used. Also new words will be introduced. Finally, the lesson ends with an activity to review what have been practiced.

Main Aims

  • To help students practice speaking in the context of talking about marriage customs and proverbs about marriage.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To introduce students to, and give them practice using, vocabulary related to marriage.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students.

The teacher introduces the topic "The Big day" by bringing pictures of marriages from different parts of the world. Sts. are called to the whiteboard and start to discuss the pictures .

Exposure (5-9 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Now the students have been introduced to the unit "The Big Day", they will be exposed to the skill of listening for gist. Then a HO will be passed out, where they will discuss in groups. Sts. will be introduced to new vocabulary words which might be difficult for them in the text. When listening, sts. will look for answers to three questions. After listening, Sts. will share answers in groups.

Highlightng (1-2 minutes) • To draw students attention to the target

The teacher makes it clear that they are going to listen to the audio once only for this activity. They must be fast at grasping the answers to the question.

Clarification (4-5 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form, and pronounciation of the target language

Teacher clarifies the meaning and pronunciation of difficult words in the task. Teacher writes the sentences on the whiteboard and deal with them according to the problem.

Controlled practice (5-8 minutes) • To prepare the students for the listening activity.

Chest HO: teacher introduces the HO and instructs to do EX.1 St. will read the questions individually. PW: sts. discuss the questions in groups. Teacher writes four words on the board and put them into sentences in order to look at meaning, form, and pronunciation. Now sts. are ready for the listening text. The teacher will hand in questions for the students to answer while listening. Sts. will be given one minute to read the questions before the audio is played. After the audio is finished students will be moved into pairs to discuss their answers.

Semi-controlled practice (8-15 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Students will be given a HO about (weddings they have been too), and they will read the questions for a few minutes and prepare a discussion in front of the class. Then sts. will do the exercise "Marriage is...." in groups. Then they will be given a handout to finish the sentences according to their opinion. Also, flash cards will be posted on the board and they must match them to complete the meaning.

Post Practice (5-7 minutes) • To provide the students with free practice of target language

This is an activity where students get to practice making sentences concerning marriage. The sentence starts off by saying "Marriage is.........." and must be completed by students. This will be done on the board as a completion.
