Teaching Practice 2 - 11 Feb 2023
Intermediate level

Description

In this lesson, students will be provided reading practice for gist and detailed information.

Materials

Abc Reading text A - the human computer
Abc Reading text B - the human camera

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about people with superior abilities in the context of lifestyle and human interest stories

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification of possible unfamiliar vocabulary in the context of lifestyle and human interest stories

Procedure

Warmer/LeLad-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

1. Using question 4A in the textbook, set the context for the lesson and ask ss (whole class) to imagine/brainstorm possible abilities of someone called "a human computer" or "a human camera". Use the pictures and table set up on Google document to write down ss predictions. Tell ss we are about to read two stories to verify whether their predictions are correct. 2. Pre-teach vocabulary (porridge - pebbles - pi - MBE) - very quick activity on Jamboard, clarify any doubts.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Use exercise 4B page 83 as a Gist task. - assign students either "A" or "B" - share link for reading "A" and reading "B" in the zoom chat, and ask ss to open up the link corresponding to their assigned letter - Set timer at 3 minutes and ask ss to read their text and verify whether their initial predictions were correct or not - Check with the whole class: how many did we guess? Use questions in $C as a detailed task for reading 2. Give 10 mins for this task. - ask ss to read a second time and answer the questions below the text with a short sentence (same google forms) - in BOR, ss As and Bs get together to check answers (3-4 mins) - whole class feedback

While-Reading/Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

back to main ss, explain to ss that they will be paired with someone who has read the other text and they will exchange information on what they read. - set BORs for 5-6 minutes to allow ss to exchange information

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

- wrap up in main session asking ss if there are any special abilities they'd like to have and why.
