Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of simple present affirmative in the context of the world of work.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To teach Ss the simple present affirmative through the skill of reading and use simple present affirmative in speaking.

Procedure

Set the context. (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Start a discussion with Ss about work. Say where I work, where I live and how I got to work. Encourage Ss to continue conversation with me.

Pre-teach vocabulary for reading task (8-10 minutes) • To pre-teach and expand on the vocabulary for the reading

Use flash cards to elicit places of work from Ss Write vocab on WB as word elicited from Ss and drill pronunciation. Reuse flash cards by asking the students, "Who works in a__________?" to refresh their vocab on jobs. Show group

Highlighting Ss to TL (4-7 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language by making them focus on the verbs and seeing how a sentence can be formed.

Show Ss the picture of a banker. Drill Ss on pronunciation. Ask Ss to identify the verbs in the caption below. Ask students to do gap fill exercise on worksheet. Monitor Ss. Get Ss to check answers in pairs.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Bring Ss attention back to the picture and caption. CCQs - Has Fred got a job? yes, What is his Job? he works in a bank, Does he work there on Monday? yes, Will he work there tomorrow? yes, Is he there NOW? Whats another word for now? now = present.

Controlled Practice (10-12 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Ask Ss to look at the pictures. Ask them what can they see? Where are they? How many people? Ask Ss to read the text and match the paragraphs to the pictures. Get Ss to check in pairs. Ask Ss why they match the pictures. Get Ss to read the passage again and do the identify the people in more detail by completing the task to the right of the text. Get Ss to check in pairs. Ask the Ss in pairs to underline the verbs in the text. Ask students if they notice the verbs change in the text. See if Ss have noticed the change in the form to the verb after, he, she, (it).

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Ask Ss to write a short text about themselves With help from the prompting questions. Get students to stand up and walk around class and tell each other what they have written. Monitor and listen for errors. Give feedback to WC
