Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in describing someone you admire in same context.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Show ss photos of famous characters. Ask the students how many of the people in the photos do you recognize, what do you think they have in common, and why do you think people admire them. Make them discuss in pairs. WC feedback.

Exposure (3-5 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

Ss listen to two people talking about someone they particularly admire and note down why they admire each person. Check in pairs.

Test #1 (5-8 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the target language

The teacher gives the students HO1 which is a matching activity containing the adjectives from the target language and meanings and asks them to match each adjective with the right meaning. After they finished the teacher asks them to check with a partner. Provide answer key.

Teach (10-15 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in the first test stage

In this stage, use the answer key of the previous task and ask them about the grammar name of these words "adjectives" elicit the type of adjectives and clarify that they are personal adjectives, not physical adjectives. Teacher clarifies areas of target language, which in this case is vocabulary (positive characteristics) by using ECDW and then asks CCQs to clarify the word, it is followed by a drill paying attention to word stress. Give ss the second HO and tell them that they are going to identify which adjectives are suitable for each job. ICQ: are you going to add any characteristics? Demo first one with them- After they finished the teacher asks them to discuss with a partner telling her why did you choose these adjectives for each job.

Test #2 (3-5 minutes) • Check students' use of the target language again and compare with the first test

The teacher divides them into two groups and shows them two sheets with seven qualities, and asks each group to think about which role is fitting with every quality. Then after they finished they exchange sheets and comment on the other group's opinion if they agree with them or not.

Free practice (13-15 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

In this stage, tell the students to think of someone they admire (either personally or a famous person) who has the characteristics and tell your group about him or her. the T gives them 2 minutes to prepare and make notes about the person they are going to talk about. Ask them Which characteristics they most admire in others? which are unimportant to you?
