Teaching Practice 1 - 3 Feb 2023
Intermediate level

Description

In this lesson, students will be provided reading practice for gist and detailed information.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed listening practice using a text about different professions in the context of dream jobs

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of collocations, expressions and phrasal verbs in the context of different work situations
  • To provide speaking practice in a conversation in the context of personal work experience

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-7 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Start class by asking ss what their job is and whether they like it, meanwhile open up Google Slides, slide1: ss look at the pictures and try to guess what the three jobs shown might be (Don't give answers). Briefly discuss with students whether they'd like to have these jobs and why/why not and what their dream job may be (This covers questions in exercise 1 page 47 in SB).

Pre-Reading/Listening (3-5 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Pre-teach vocab: Jamboard activities (boards 1 and 2): 1. ss drag and drop sticky notes with selected lexis under the corresponding picture. Take time to clarify FMPA for each (or where necessary). 2. jumbled sentences - focus on 'boiling / play about / come up with / impossible to please / outfit'

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

1. While listening: Tell learners they will hear an audio 4.2 to get the general idea of the text. Have them answer exercise 2a/ b as they listen (give the task before the audio starts playing - Google Form) 2. Answer check - whole class

While-Reading/Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

1. Learners listen a second time and complete exercise 2c as they listen (same google form) Learners check answers in pairs before OCFB (Open Class Feedback)

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Have learners discuss their work experiences through these questions: - what was your very first job? - is there any well-paid job you would never do? why? Conduct feedback on the task. Delayed Error Correction.
