Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of future plans

Procedure

Lead in (5-7 minutes) • to introduce and generate interest in the practice of talking about future events

I will start by telling students that when I was younger I wanted to be a professional football player. I wanted to make big money and be a star in the best league in the nation and be famous. I will then ask them to tell their partner what they wanted to be when they were a child. I get some feedback and then ask them to discuss with a partner again only this time tell their partner plans they have for the future today. I will give them a matching hand out and have them match people future plans.

meaning, form, pronounciation (7-10 minutes) • to make clear the meaning, form, and pronunciation of present continious

I will elicit a sentence from students that relates to future plans. (I am going to go to the United States next year.) We will discuss that this means you are definitely going to the united states in the future. I will use CCQ's such as "Is this in the past, future or present?" "Are you definitely going?" Then I will use different words in there like I am hoping to go to the US next year. or I would like to go to the US next. I will try to differentiate between definitely going to do something and plans that are not certain. Then we will practice with writing personal sentences with the activity hand out.

negative, positive or question (7-10 minutes) • to clearify what different form are positive or negative

I will write a chart on the board with various form of going to do something. Some of the spots in the columns will be blank. I will have sts pair up and talk about what forms need to go into the blank columns. Then I will have them come to the board and write the correct form in the write column. This should help them create their own positive or negative sentence. Then the students will work on an activity ho\and out together.

Speaking (10-15 minutes) • to generate creative dialogue between the students of future plans

I will have the students give me two examples of what they would like me to describe about my future plans from the examples on the activity hand out. I will give them an example of what I would do with the sentence and Then have them pair up and ask each other what they might do for the examples provided. I will ask them to create a back and forth dialogue of at least two sentences. Then we will switch and the other partner will get a chance to tell about his/her future plans.
