Main Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of short u sound.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification of short words with short u sound in the context of a simple book.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Review words from previous week. shop, fox, hog, pot, mix, eggs, drop, mop. Write words on board, ask students to read.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

Present new vocabulary: bug, hug, duck, fun, run, rub, sub, tub, mud, suds. 1. Read and have students repeat together and individually. 2. Confirm understanding of meanings. Have pictures of some of the words and ask students to match.

Useful Language (8-10 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

1. Hold up picture and ask students to say matching word. 2. Hold up word and ask students to point to picture. 3. Matching worksheet.

Productive Task(s) (18-20 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

1. Read story and have students repeat sentences. 2. Have students take turns reading pages.

Feedback and Error Correction (8-10 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

1. Worksheet for listening. Circle the word heard. 2. Write sentences on the board, students choose the correct option. a. Gus run/runs in the mud. b. The tub has sud/suds. c. Gus get/gets in the tub.
