In this lesson students will enhancing their reading skill and how to read for gist, specific information and detailed information.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist, scan and detailed reading practice using a text about ةysterious story in the context of murder in a country house

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a debate in the context of who's the murder

Procedure

Lead-in (5 minutes) • To engage the students and activate their prior knowledge.

Show the students a picture of Ria and Sakina and ask them questions like, "Do you know those people? "Ask students to work in pairs to discuss what they know about those people & what's their job? OCF

pre - teach vocabulary (5 minutes) • To prepare students for the text

Tell the students  situations to know the words that help them to answer the questions later. For example, in the lead in stage, the students may say that Raya and Sakina are killers, so another word for killers is murder. The words are (murder, business partner, country house  inspector). ECDW

Reading for gist (5 minutes) • The students get general idea about the text

Show the students the picture of a house and start asking them questions like, "What is it?" Is it old? Where do you think it is? Ask them to look at the title and discuss in groups what the story will be about.

useful language (5 minutes) • Students will be aware of the language that exists in the text as they will use the same language later.

There are highlighted words in the text. Ask students to decide whether they are nouns, verbs, etc.After their answers, ask them to decide which tense these verbs are in and to write the infinitive form of them. Then go through MFP .

Reading for specific information (5 minutes) • Students practice how to search for specific information

Show the student the back cover of the book and ask them what kind of information we have at the back of the book (the introduction or the summary).Ask them to look at the pictures beneath the cover of the book, read the summary, and figure out what the connection is between these people and the dead man.Ask ICQs to check their understanding.

Reading for details (8-10 minutes) • Students know more details about the text

Ask students to read the question in EX (c) and play the audio to answer the questions. Ask them to read the text to check their answers and to correct the incorrect sentences. Pair checking then key answer.

Follow up (10 minutes) • Enhance their speaking skill. Promote group work

Ask students to set up in groups, then ask them to do a small debate about who committed the murder and why.
