Description

In this lesson ss learn and practice about past habits. First I will tell them that I will take them to a fantasy trip so they will close their eyes and listen and concentrate to what I am saying.Once they finish listening to the fantasy story I was saying , I will tell them to be pairs for them to tell each other about the situations they experienced. This will improve their productive skill of speaking. Then I will ask some volunteers to tell me about their friends experience. (we will have a conversation) After that we will be emphasizing on MFPA of used to. Following that we will do a dictation activity which will improve their receptive skills. Finally, they will write their own poem using used to. By the end of the lesson they should be able to understand the use of used to.

Main Aims

  • To provide review, practice and clarification of used to in the context of childhood

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation and to dictate sentences of used to so it is integrated skills

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-7 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will put a picture of my childhood on the board and ask them some questions to get them the idea that the story is about my childhood.I will tell them a very short story about my childhood by getting help from the ss.

Exposure (10-12 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

I will tell them that I will take them on a fantasy trip. I will askthem to close their eyes, sit comfortably and relax. Askthem to breath for half a minute and I will begin the meditative music. When I am sure that the class is relaxed I will start to read them the text to take them on the fantasy trip. When I finish reading, I will put them in pairs and tell them to tell eachother their fantasy trip. What they have experienced about the fantasy trip. Ask some questions to the nominated ss and try to get one of the ss say used to. Once you have write a sentence on the board if nobody comes up with anything elicit it in a different way from the ss.

Highlighting (2-3 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

I will write two sentences on the board and highlight used to in one sentence and the regular formed veb of past in the second sentence. I used to visit my grandparents every summer. One year I rented a boat.

Clarification (7-8 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

I will ask CCQS first to make sure they understand the meaning. I will elicit the negative and question form from the ss and make sure they undertand that the -d is not written or said.After that I will draw a time line and ask for volunteers to come and show the difference of simple past and past habits. I will aslo ask SS to show the S+V+O of the sentences. Then I will write the phonetic script, intonation and stress and drill the sentence. Sentence /juːst ˈvɪz.ɪt/ ex:I used to visit my grandparents every summer. (anlyse and drill the intonation and stress) Do I visit my grandparents twice a week ? Maybe. Did I visit my grandparents every summer before? Yes Do I visit my grandparents every summer (now)? No ex:One year we rented a boat. Do I rent it evey year? No Did I rent it only once? Yes

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Give ss the handout which they will fill in the blanks according to the correct form of negative, positive and question. They willdo this individually. Then tell them to check in pairs and then give them the answer key. Give FB if needed.

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Hang the paper with the poem of used to on. Tell them that from every pair one ss will run and read the sentence and tell their friend and their friend have to write the sentence correctly on a piece of paper. (dictation)Give them numbers tell Now put the SS in pairs. Tell them that when you say swop they have to change places. When you say time is up they will go and check if they wrote it correct. Tell them They can only say one sentence or word twice if their friend doesn't understand and can not write they have to carry on with the next line.demonstartion, ICQS must be done.

Free Practice (5-7 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

If enough time they will write their own poems about used to and come and read it to their friends.
