Description

In this lesson, students learn about festivals and celebrations through guided discovery based on reading text about fascinating festivals. the lesson starts with discussion about festivals in Egypt. This is followed by pre-teach vocabulary to help the Ss while reading. Then they will gist read and read for specific information. Finally there is a speaking task the Ss will ask their partners some questions about their favorites.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist, scan and detailed reading practice using a text about fascinating festivals in the context of the Tomatina festival, Carnevale d'lvrea and water festival.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of your favorites

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

set the context and show the Ss some pictures for people celebrating some Egyptian festivals and then ask them to discuss with there partner some of the festivals they celebrate in Egypt and where do they go and what do they eat in these festivals, then we will have OCF.

Pre-teach vocabulary (4-6 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

I will teach the Ss some vocabulary to help them understand the text and to clarify the TL. such as (fascinating festivals/ wear clothes/ throw water at/ take part in/ take place in or on) using ECDW

Gist reading / reading for specific info. (10-14 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading tasks

Give the Ss a couple pf minutes to read the text and match the photos to the paragraphs they have then they will check their answers in pairs. Then they will get to read the text one more time to find out when and where each festival takes place and what do they throw in each festival.

reading for details (3-7 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading tasks

In this stage Ss will read an article about Clara's favorites under the title of Times you love to match the missing parts from A till E to complete the missing parts from Clara's answers.

Post-Reading ( speaking task ) / Feedback (8-13 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

The Ss will ask and answer the questions in the article of Times you love so that they get to use and practice the TL
