PRE-INTERMEDIATE LEVEL level

Description

In this part of the lesson, the focus will be on one long listening exercise and vocabulary related to celebrities and movies

Materials

Abc hand out with listening exercises
Abc 1 conversation belonging to Straightforward, pre-intermediate student's book
Abc transcript of conversation
Abc pictures of famous people found on google
Abc list of movie genres

Main Aims

  • to improve the students' listening skills and practice words related to famous people and movies

Subsidiary Aims

  • to give students practice in speaking for fluency, to make them familiar with new vocabulary, to listen for general information (in 1st listening) , then for more detailed information (2nd listening)

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (6-9 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students: I will make them familiar with words related to movies. After this part, they will know more about movie genres

First I will do some eliciting and concept check questions concerning the "quasi" synonyms: celebrity, star, idol .. Then I will ask them about their favourite movies (WC). I will divide the class in 3 groups and give them each a picture of a scene of a movie (but not yet the poster) and a picture of the main actor, They have to figure out the title, the name of the main actor, the genre ( I ll give them a list of possible genres) and write in one line what the movie is about. Once they have found out all these details, one speaker of each group is asked to go to the whiteboard and write down , under the movie poster: the name of the movie, the genre and the name of the main actor (s). Ideally they also say or write down what the plot is about but I think they will not want to do that. So probably we will do that together, as a whole class activity. If this is taking too long, I will do this as a WC activity.

Pre-Reading/Listening (4-6 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

I will pre-teach some vocab: company, cute, chauffeur, a cab, get fired, ice cream

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

I will hand out the exercises and begin with the 1st listening. Then, I will ask them less challenging questions about the conversations such as: who spoke first, second, third.. They will do exercise 1 (WC) and I will also ask them about the different accents which are used in the conversation.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (14-15 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Second listening: I will interrupt the audio after every single conversation and ask the students true or false questions. This will make the long listening more dynamic. After the 2nd listening, the students will do exercise 2 in pairs. I will then also give them the transcript of the conversation.

Post-Reading/Listening (5-8 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

I will ask them if they have understood the conversation. Depending on how much time is left, I will ask them questions such as: Have you ever met a famous person? Name some famous movie stars in Turkey? What is the best Turkish movie?
