Natural disasters lesson
Pre intermediate level
To provide clarification of Natural disaster vocabulary in the context of travel using photos and a listening file
Perhaps the most important element of any plan is the part where we say what our aims are.Jeremy Harmer in The Practice of English Language Teaching
Procedure (14-18 minutes)
The teacher will provide photos related to natural disasters and asks the students to look at them and guess what phenomenon is each photo related to .
In this part teacher will divide the students into pairs/groups then the teacher will provide a listening for students in which we get to know about a disastrous family trip ,they travel around the world and are faced with many natural disasters and students are asked to write down which disaster (They were all talked about previously in Lead-in) happened in each place.(gist) **Students are shown a map in which every place the family traveled through had been marked and named to simplify the first task. Afterwards they check their answers in pairs and then with teacher
The teacher starts this part with a task .It includes every disaster previously mentioned and the definitions of the disasters . Students are asked to match the words (disasters) to their definitions . they then check their answers with the teacher. Note to my own teacher ! (In this part students should be asked to read each word and it's definition aloud ,but since we don't have time we exclude this part and will simply ask them to match the words to numbers)
In this part teacher will provide the 3rd task. the questions are related to the listening which is going to be played for students momentarily .To answer them students need to have a deeper understanding of the listening .Then the teacher will play the listening for the 2nd time. when the listening is done the students ought to check their answers in pairs (which we don't have time for and is just mentioned briefly in the class) and then with the teacher. !Note to my own teacher Ms. Hamidpour . This is the part we can challenge the students about their answers and ask them to participate in the class a lot more .We can ask them about the reasoning behind their answers and if a question is replied with various answers we can ask them to defend their views .But since we don't have time I have to omit this part.
The teacher will ask the students to write about if they have been in a natural disaster and what was the experience like .
