In this lesson, students practice making requests using will and shall through a listening activity based on two people making decisions. I will get them to work through 3 grammar activities after making them discuss about the pictures of the listening activity. Lastly, some prompts will be given to them and SS will have the chance to practice using will and shall for instant responses through conversations they set up with a partner.

Main Aims

  • To provide practice of will and shall used for instant responses in the context of conversations

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist listening practice using a text about making decisions

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The students will be given their first handouts containing a listening activity and 3 grammar exercises. The teacher focuses SS' attention on the pictures of the listening activity and encourage them to guess what might be going on in each picture in pairs.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide a model of the task and highlight useful words and phrases

SS will have a discussion about the pictures in pairs and share their ideas with the rest of the class and we'll talk about them together to make sure they are engaged with the topic. Then they will listen to the audio and try to decide what each person wants to do in the pictures.

Task 1 (10-15 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Students choose the correct answer in exercise 2 individually and discuss their answers in pairs. Then they'll listen to the audio again to check their answers and I will have one of them to write the answers on the board.

Task 2 (5-10 minutes) • To allow students to report on how they did the task and how it went

SS will continue with the Grammar box on the same handouts. In exercise 1a they're expected to find 2 examples of offers and two examples of suggestions from the previous exercise. They'll discuss their answers in pairs and share them with the rest of the class.

Task 3 (5-10 minutes)

Students will be given another handout containing 4 different situations.(Cutting Edge Third Edition, Intermediate Student's Book page 127.) All situations have 3 possible answers and students are expected to choose one of their own and tell which response they'd give and why. They'll work in pairs.

Language Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with practice of the task language

The teacher asks students to create their own conversations by which they can practice using will and shall for instant responses. Then, volunteers can come and act out their dialogue. Teacher monitors and gives feedback.
