Main Aims

  • To provide practice of English in the context of reference letter

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist reading practice using a text about reference letter in the context of getting a job

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students re: job hunting

Ask general questions about if they would be good for a job based on a short reading of a job posting

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a reference letter

students will read a letter focusing on bolded adjectives and adverbs, and then discuss if Ray is a good fit for the job

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Go over four separate words and define them then discern as a group whether they are adjectives or adverbs. Work on pronunciation

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

We will use a google form and independent work to discern the proper word in a sentence. Students will compare answers in a breakout room, then we'll go over it in class.

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Identify which of the sentences are true for them, and give them an opportunity to change the sentence to make it true for themselves.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Go into breakout rooms and see what they have in common amidst those sentences. Figure out if they need to change anything, and learn more about each other using the target language.
