Description

In this lesson students will practice speaking skills in the context of film. They will also practice gist and detailed listening. New vocabulary will be presented during the lesson. At the end students will practice the freer speaking.

Main Aims

  • To provide practice of speaking in the context of film.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice new vocabulary in the context of film.
  • To provide gist and detailed listening using texts in the context of film.

Procedure

Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • Introduce the subject to the students

Show them pictures of different films and ask some questions like: Do you remember this film?, What kind of film is it?, Does everybody agree/disagree? While learning new vocabulary the teacher will practice drilling and highlighting word stress of the new words.

Warm up activity (3-4 minutes) • To check the vocabulary they have already know in the context of film

The teacher divides the class into pairs and asks them to talk about their favorite film using the words from the ex. 3 (Warm up section) on the page 38 and the words they just learned. The teacher is going to monitor the class to determine which of the vocabulary words to focus on. Then the teacher will ask them what did they learn about their partners, will work on errors and new words and expressions from the exercise.

Vocabulary (3-5 minutes) • To learn new words and expressions

The teacher will present new words and expressions to the students by drilling them.

A whole class activity (3-4 minutes) • To repeat new vocabulary

The teacher will show the students pictures at the top of the page 38 and ask some questions like: What do you see in the first/second/third/ fourth picture?, What kind of film is it?, Does everybody agree/disagree?, Which country was this film made in? etc.

Listening for gist (5-6 minutes) • To practice gist listening

The teacher will ask the students to read the exercises 1 and 2 on the page 38. She/He will give the students 30 seconds to read them. Then the teacher will ask if the students understood what they are going to do. After that the teacher will play three conversations to the students (1.44-1.46) and ask them to do the exercises. The teacher will check answers and ask if everybody agree with them.

Listening for details (7-9 minutes) • To practice and drill new vocabulary and highlight the word stress

The teacher will ask students to read phrases from the ex. 2 on the page 38 (Language Focus part) and decide if these phrases mean agree (A), disagree (D) or both agree and disagree (B). Then she/he will play a text and ask the students to try to repeat each phrase as it was said in the text. After that the teacher will do some drilling.

Speaking (8-10 minutes) • To practice controlled speaking

The teacher will explain activities A and B in Speaking section. She/He will ask them to choose one of them, making this activity less controlled, and do the chosen one. After that the teacher will ask the students to discuss them with the partner and ask each other if they agree or not. At that time the teacher is going to monitor each group writing down their mistakes to do the errors' correction later.

Feedback (4-5 minutes) • To practice error correction feedback

The teacher is going to practice error correction feedback by giving the examples of those mistakes and asking them to correct them.
