Description

In this lesson students will read first for gist and then scan for details. Students will predict with the help of the pictures what they are going to read about. Then they will be given the parts of the text to be put in order. After finishing it the students will scan the text to find the answers to the questions.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and scan reading practice using a text about Anne Frank's Diary.

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation about Anne Frank's Diary

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-7 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Ss write a vocabulary quiz.

Pre-Reading/Listening (3-5 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Remind them the words that they have learned and the pictures that they have seen. Predict what they are going to read about.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Divide the class into 2-3 groups.Hand out parts of the text and ask sts to put them in order. monitor while reading for gist. Ask a few questions: what happened on 26th July, 1943? Nazis were bombing their place. How did she feel? She was very scared Where did they live? in a basement. Who helped them? Dutch family How did they help? They smuggled supplies

While-Reading/Listening #2 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Draw a table on the board and in each column there are questions on strips of the paper. Each group chooses a runner. The runner grabs the question from the board and the group tries to find the answer. The group that finishes first gets a star.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

On the right side of the board write the text types( report, explanation, biography, autobiography, instruction) Elicit what they know about them. Which one is Ann Frank's diary? Autobiography Explain what the features of autobiography( 1st person, the person writes himself) Compare autobiography and biography.( 1st person and 3rd person) How did you feel after reading Ann Frank's diary? Would you feel the same if it was a biogarphy? H/W- ex B p6
