Unit 1, vocabulary
Grade 5 ( year 6) level

Description

In this lesson students will learn new vocabulary of the Unit 1. First they will be given some sentences with new vocabulary and asked to guess the meaning of the new words. Then the h/o with definitions and the words will be given to match. Then the answer key will be given to check. As soon as the students get familiar with the new vocabulary play the game back to the board.

Main Aims

  • To provide practice and clarification of the vocabulary unit 1.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation using the vocabulary of Unit 1

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Show the pictures of the World War and the basement where the Franks lived. Ask sts to describe the pictures.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Handout the sentences with new vocabulary( persecute, flee, smuggle, washbasin, sink, attic, deprive, clasp) In pairs, sts guess the meaning of these words and write a synonym or phrase to explain them. Monitor while sts are working, give some clues to those who are struggling.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Show the words and definitions on the board. Elicit part of speech of each word. Drill them individually and chorally.

Controlled Practice (10-12 minutes) • To concept check

Hand out the papers with words and definitions and ask sts in pairs to match in order to check how well they remembered the new vocabulary. Handout Vocabulary worksheet and nominate each st to fill in the vocabulary page.

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Invite one of the sts to sit back to the board, I write a new word on the board, the rest of the class tries to explain that word to the st who sits back to the board. As soon as he/she finds the word, he nominates another st to sit in his place and writes a new word on the board and the others explain the word. H/W - learn the new vocabulary
