Main Aims

  • To provide practice and review of Time Linkers in the context of hoaxes and fake news.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide useful language to describe how the timing of events in a story relates to one another.

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Personalization: Ask students to talk about their experience with news especially fake news * There will be some pictures that are related to fake news shown in the Google Slides. - The teacher will ask students some questions to help them being engaged an reflect their own experience. - Are you interested in news? - Do you prefer to read, listen to or watch news? - From which resource do you usually get news? - Do you trust everything you read, see, hear on the news? - Have you heard a news and trust it then discovered that it's fake? - Do you think fake news are harmful? Why? * Clarify the meaning of "Hoax" and its relation to the lesson. * The students might watch a video about fake news if there is enough time.

Text-work (8-10 minutes) • To ensure general understanding and getting students familiar with the lesson topic after the initial listening.

*Procedure: Filling the gap/ completing phrases - The students will listen to a record and have a task in which they should complete the extracts about the first hoax mentioned in the radio programme, using the correct linking word in the boxes. (text) as it is a text-based lesson. - The teacher will share the link of Google Slides and specify a slide for each student so they can do it individually before the OCFB.

Language Clarification (15-20 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language.

- In this stage, the teacher will share Google Slides to clarify and discuss MFP. * Meaning (M): The students will do a task in Google Slides in which they should match time linkers with the meaning written in a table. - OCFB: The students will share their answers and discuss them with the teacher to get feedback later on. * Form (F): - Ask students which part of speech are time linkers? Clarify that they are adverbs. - Discussing the use of time linkers and where can they occur in the sentence. *pronunciation (P): - Students will be asked to divide time linkers into groups according to the number of syllables and the stressed ones. - connections and linked words: the two phrases "as soon as" and "by the time" will be discussed. * The teacher will pronounce all time linkers and ask the students to repeat/ imitate.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To check students' use of the target language again and prepare them for more meaningful practice.

For this practice, the students will have a task in which they should read the story of the Piltdown Man and choose the best time linker options.

Free practice + DEC (13-15 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language.

- Ask the students to write 2-3 Sentences with Time Linkers about any fake news or hoaxes they heard, watched, or read. - Feedback and DEC.
