Description

In this class, students will learn how to use phrases to give examples and add additional information into an opinion piece about technology.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide product writing practice of an opinion piece in the context of technology and learning new skills as one ages.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification, review and practice of vocabulary for giving examples and adding extra information in the context of an opinion piece
  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a small group conversations in the context of an opinion piece about technology and learning new skills as one ages
  • To provide gist and scan reading practice using a text about technology and learning new skills as one ages in the context of an opinion piece

Procedure

Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Students discuss the following in groups of 2/3: (2 minutes) In your opinion, what is the best mobile phone brand? Explain why this is your opinion. Whole class feedback. (2 minutes)

Exposure (4-5 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

Students to read the text provided and match parts of the text to the appropriate descriptions. (4 minutes). Answers: 1. Title 2. Opinion 3. Reasons for opinion 4. Conclusion Whole class feedback. (1 minute)

Useful Language (9-10 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

Meaning (1 minute) Organise the phrases into the correct categories. Answers Giving Examples: for example, for instance, ...such as... Adding More Information: ...also... ...as well. In addition, ... On top of that, ... Whole class feedback (1 minute). Form Exercise 1 (2 minutes) Students will organise the phrases from the previous task into where they fall in a sentence. Beginning of a sentence In addition, On top of that, for instance, for example, Middle of a sentence ...also... ...such as... for instance, for example, End of a sentence ...as well. Exercise 2 (2 minutes) Students to put phrases into correct grammatical structure. Answers: 1. also 2. for instance, for example, on top of that, in addition 3. such as 4. as well Whole class feedback (1 minute). Appropriacy (2 minutes) Students read the same text the saw in the first task and discuss text appropriacy. What kind of publication would you find this text in? Is this text formal, neutral or informal? Give examples from the text to support your answer. Whole class feedback. (1 minute)

Productive Task(s) (18-20 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Technology should be accessible to everyone. 2. Everyone should learn something new after the age of fifty.

Feedback and Error Correction (5-6 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

Students to review the following common errors individually: (3 minutes) 1. On top of that I think technology is very important. 2. There are lots of types of technology; mobile phones, laptops and iPads for example. 3. As well, I really like that my phone has a great camera. Students to review errors made in the class - whole class exercise. (3 minutes)
