Main Aims

  • To provide practice of Present continuous in the context of future plans

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of weekend plans

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To get students engaged and familiar with the TL

1. T will start by sharing screen on ZOOM showing a Google JamBoard with 3 questions to set up the TL. 2. T will call on 3 different Ss to read the sentences and then T will show the 2 follow up questions that Ss must answer. 3. T will call on Ss to answer the questions and will ask the others if they agree. (4 minutes)

TL gist task (4-5 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

1. T will share screen on Zoom and show a google form where the Ss will read a set of conversations to find out whether the text is talking about past events, ongoing events, or future events. 2. T will instruct Ss that this is individual work, and they have 2 minutes to read and answer the question at the bottom. (3 minutes independent work) 3. After time is up T will split Ss up into pairs to engage in peer check. (1 minute group work) 4. After time is up T will bring Ss back into Zoom call for OCFB to see if they all had the same answer. (1-minute OCFB)

Clarification (5-6 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

1. T will share screen to show a Google slide where 5 sentences with the TL will be shown. T will let Ss know that they must read the sentences and change the verbs to fix the grammatical issues. 2. T shares link and Ss work in groups (breakout rooms) with their group’s corresponding slide number. ICQ: What slide will group 2 work on? A: 2 What slide will group 3 work on? A: slide 3 (3 minutes group work) 3. After time is up, T will bring the Ss back into the main Zoom call to go over the correct tenses and cover the appropriacy for each word used. (2 minutes)

Controlled Practice (10-13 minutes) • To allow students to practice their TL understanding with some context guidance

1. T will begin by sharing screen showing a Google form where T will instruct Ss that they must read the questions individually and fill in the blanks with the best fitting answer. T will demo the first question with the Ss so they understand the steps. (7 minutes independent work) 2. After time is up T will instruct Ss that they must now work in groups to go over their answers for peer feedback. (5 minutes group work) 3. After time is up T will bring Ss back into the main room to go over the answers the Ss got as a class to see if they got them right. (3 minutes OCFB)

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

1. T will Share screen to show the Ss a Google JamBoard showing 4 questions. T will then Demo one of the questions, so Ss understand how to use the TL in their answer. This will promote authentic use of the TL while making the conversations personal to their weekend plans. 2. T will share link and instruct Ss that they will be split up into groups to discuss their plans. (8 minutes group work)

Feedback (5-7 minutes) • To discuss the answers the students came up with

1. After time is up T will gather Ss back into the main Zoom call and will discuss some of the answers that they came up with. 2. T will call on Ss to share with the class how they were planning on spending their weekend. (5 minutes OCFB) 3. After OCFB T will go over any mistakes they might’ve heard in the Ss language during any of their discussions. (2 minutes DEC)
