Teaching Practice 2
Pre-Intermediate level

Description

This will be a language class during which students will practice their reading and listening skills in the context of cooking, and learn a new grammar subject -countable and uncountable nouns. First they will be introduced to the context with a quick semi-controlled discussion and read the text to be able to follow the instructions of the listening task. After that, they will learn the grammar subject and do the first two exercises on pg 135. Finally if there is enough time, there will be a role-playing task as a flexi stage.

Main Aims

  • Grammar

Subsidiary Aims

  • Listening for gist and specific details

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I start with asking questions about cooking and if they like it or not.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Then I learn if they also cook for their relatives to give them a chance to practice the lexis they learnt at the previous class. I show the pictures of some of the world cousines and ask them which cousines they like. Then I ask them how they prepare and store these foods.

Controlled Practice (5-8 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

I ask the sts if they know any tips/secrets about cooking and want them to share those tips with the class. Then I tell them that there are some other secrets from the world's top kitchens and want them to read the passage on pg 20. After that I play the listening part and discuss each of the tips the passage gives us. I ask the sts if these tips make any sense and if they have ever heard about them.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • Grammar

By using a few sentences from the reading task, I point out the adjectives such as "too much and a little." I start to teach the grammar task and elicit the countable and uncountable adjectives.

Controlled Practice (3-4 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

I ask the students to do the exercise 1 on pg 135. Then I make them work in pairs and check their answers with different partners. After I get some feedback, I ask them to do the second exercise with their current partners this time and I check their answers by asking them.

Free Practice (4-8 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

After I guide them with the question form of the subject, I want them to work in pairs again. This time they are supposed to have a different partner. As a role-playing task, one student talks about a dish that he/she prepares by using the adjectives in subject while the other is asking "how much/many" questions.
