Description

In this lesson, students will be guided to write a short biography of someone they know or admire.

Main Aims

  • To provide product writing practice of a biography in the context of someone they know or admire.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide process writing practice of a to write a biography in the context of someone they know or admire.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (1-3 minutes) • To introduce and generate interest in the topic

1. T sets timer for stage (5 minutes) 2. T shares screen 3. T gives instructions: (1 min) “Who do you admire?” 4. OCFB: T nominates a few students to share for 1-2 minutes

Gist Task / Model (5-8 minutes) • To lead the Ss into the general theme of the text; to provide a model of the text type

1. T sets timer for stage (8 minutes) 2. T shares screen 3. T gives instructions: 3 min “You will have 3 minutes to read Johnny Depp’s biography” 4. T asks students to read quickly and match the paragraphs and the topic described.

Language Focus (3-5 minutes) • To focus on the text structure; to introduce and highlight useful language for the task

1. T shares screen with slide 6. T gives instructions on the activity with pronouns and adverbs (up to slide 13). Depending on time, they will mainly do activities on slide 8. Slides 10 and 12 are easy but optional. Students are probably familiar with this vocabulary and this would be only a very quick revision.

Preparation / Planning (8-10 minutes) • To give Ss thinking and note-taking time to organize ideas for the subsequent task

1. T sets timer for stage (10 minutes) 2. T shares screen (slide 14) 3. T gives instructions: (1 min) “Now make notes about the person you admire. Work with a partner and share your notes." 4. T monitors break out rooms and writes some good and bad examples of the expressions. 5. After 5 (depending on lesson time left) minutes, T brings Ss back to the main room.

Writing Task (3-5 minutes) • To provide authentic written practice using correct text type structure and target language presented.

1. T sets timer for stage (3 minutes). 2. T shares screen (slide 16). 3. T gives instructions: (1 min). “Now organize what you wrote on the notes and write this person's biography." 4. T shares the Word online link on slide 17. 5. T gives students 8 minutes to write.

Publishing (5-8 minutes) • To provide practice in skimming & reading for details; to promote interest in what other Ss have written

1. T sets timer for stage (10 minutes). 2. T shares screen (Word online document) and makes sure students are using it. 3. T gives instructions: (1 min). “Now share what you wrote on the notes and write this person's biography on the link." 4. T sends students to breakout rooms and students will share what they wrote with a peer. 5. T ends breakout rooms.

Feedback on Content & Language (3-5 minutes) • To share a student’s work with the whole class; to highlight errors and any good language that Ss have used and promote peer correction

T provides Ss with feedback on content and language based on monitoring of the task. T will ask students to read their peers’ work.
