Description

Students will learn how to express regrets about the past by using wish+ past perfect grammar form.

Main Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of past regret.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification of wish+pp in the context of past regret.

Procedure

Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T shows the students, two pictures of herself. Asks do you notice any change. is it a positive change? then says about her regrets regarding the negative change.

Exposure (4-5 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text

T gives students time to read a text and say what grammar structure is used to express past regrets. Then asks them to check their answers for two minutes in pairs. Then she asks ICQs: How much time do you have to read the text? 2 minutes How much time do you have to work in pairs? 2 minutes Do you have to do it individually or in pairs?

Clarification (3-4 minutes) • To clarify the form of the target language

T writes some of the sentences on the board and highlights the structures of the sentences and elicits the words and helps the students to discover the rules. Then she asks CCQs: Are you talking about the past, present, or future? (past) Do you feel happy about it? (no) How do you feel about the situation? (regretful)

Controlled Practice (4-5 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

T gives students a short text to read and talk about what the writer wishes. T tells the students to have paper and pen to take notes and share their ideas in pairs for 3 minutes, then come back to class and discuss it. Then she asks ICQs: How much time do you have? 3 minutes Do you have to work individually or in pairs? pairs

Free Practice (5-6 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

T gives students 5 minutes to talk about their past regrets using the new forms, then come back to the main room and discuss together. Then she asks ICQs: How much time do you have? 5 minutes Do you have to work individually or in pairs? pairs
