Description

In this lesson students practise their reading skills (for gist and scanning). For the production stage students write an entry blog.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and scan reading practice using a text about shopping with mother

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide product writing practice of a a blog entry in the context of shopping experience

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

1. The teacher suggests watching a video and guess the topic of the lesson. 2. The teacher asks the students to discuss the following questions in pairs to share their experience: - Do you like going shopping? Why/why not? - Who do you like shopping with? Why? - Who do you dislike shopping with? Why? 3. The teacher asks for some feedback.

Pre-Reading/Listening (5-5 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

1. The teacher hands out the pre-text matching task (one per pair) and asks the students to match the underlined key vocabulary with its meaning and translation. The students work in pairs. 2. The teacher asks for the feedback

While-Reading #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with a less challenging gist and reading task

1. The teacher divides the students in groups of 4. 2. The teacher hands out the jigsaw reading task (cut) and asks the students to read their paragraph to themselves. (Give a weaker student a more simple paragraph) 3. The students read the texts silently. 4. The teacher asks to retell briefly what their text was about. 5. The students decide which text should go first, second etc depending on what they've heard. 6. The teacher hands out the student's worksheets and asks them to compare their ideas with the right answer. 7. The teacher asks to read the whole text individually and answer the following questions (task 1, Student's Worksheet): a) Who did Cathy go shopping with? b) Did she like it? Why/why not? 8. The students check their ideas in pairs.

While-Reading #2 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with a more challenging reading task

1. The students read the text once again and do task 2 (Student's Worksheet): True, False, Not Stated. The teacher reminds the students to find the proofs. 2. The students check their ideas in pair. 3. The teacher asks for the feedback.

Post-Reading (6-8 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text

1. The students are asked to share their experience about shopping (online practice) 2. The teacher asks the students to look at the gapped text and predict what should be in the gaps. 3. The students fill in their blog entries. The students are encourages to use the online translator for unknown vocabulary 4. The teachers asks those who'd like to share their blog entries.
