Description

In this lesson, students will learn and practice functional language through a reading task in the context of telling and responding to a story. The lesson begins with a lead-in about telling stories. A text-work will then introduce students to the functional language. The lesson concludes with a productive speaking activity.

Main Aims

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students in the topic area

- T shares screen and shows Jamboard two images. - Jamboard has questions for students to elicit in the context of telling and responding to a story. What do you think are the images about? Do you think they want to share a story or an experience? What do you think of Ryu's story? Do you think it's funny or scary? What do you think of Marta's story? Do you think it's sad or tenebrous? - T demo and let SS know that she will turn off her camera, so SS can speak among themselves for 3 min. - T conducts OCFB, elicits responses and records before moving on to the next stage.

Exposure (8-8 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text

- T shares SS a Google Form link so they can work independently. T ask SS if they could open the form. - INSTRUCTIONS: Read the conversation and answer the questionnaire. - T demo activity. SS have 4 minutes. - T sends students to BoR to check their answers in pairs for 2 minutes. - T conducts OCFB and displays correct answers as soon as SS come back to the main room.

Clarification (8-8 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

- T shows a new Jamboard slide Meaning CCQs: Select the correct answer: 1. A funny thing happened this morning... Is it talking a past or present situation? *Past Is it something comic or sad? *Comic 2. Anyway, Is it an expression used to return to the main topic yes or no? *Yes Is it refer to something irrelevant or important? *Irrelevant 3. It was all OK in the end. It is something good or bad? *Good Is there something wrong yes or not? *No 4. You're joking? Is it a problem or not? *No problem Is it refer to something credible or incredible? *Incredible Form - T shares the language target. SS should match the columns. Pronunciation: - SS determine where the stress goes 1. A funny thing happened this morning? 2. So, anyway, 3. It was all OK in the end 4. You're joking? - SS check in pairs their answers - T shows the answers

Controlled Practice (9-9 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

- T shows Jamboard slide with the controlled practice activity - T demo activity with a SS - SS work individually for 4 minutes Instructions: Complete the sentences with the words and phrases in the box. - SS check their answers in pairs trough breakout rooms - T conducts OCFB - Answers will be displayed upon SS come back to the main room

Free Practice (10-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

- T displays Jamboard prompting questions related to the topic. Instructions: You are going to tell a story about a time when you felt angry, embarrassed, excited or scared answering these questions. Prompting questions: • When did it happen? • Where were you? • What happened? • What were you doing when it happened? • How did you feel? • What happened in the end? - T displays a image with the useful language and demo - T sends questions in chat and demo activity - T sends SS to BoR. SS have 7 min - T monitors BoR and records correct and incorrect language use in the Jamboard - T conducts OCFB and elicits answers from students about their experiences, recording answers on the Jamboard.

Feedback (2-2 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

- T displays Jamboard with examples of correct and incorrect language use - T conducts OCFB and reviews SS language use, eliciting from SS which examples need to be fixed and how to fix them.

DEC (3-3 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production

- T writes examples of learners’ production on the screen and asks to find the correct and incorrect sentences. - T conducts OCFB.
