In this lesson, SS will learn about hypothetical possibilities with "if" by reading an article from a British magazine about social responsibility.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of hypothetical possibilities with "if". in the context of Social Responsibilities.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation about "what would you do under certain circumstances"


Lead-in (5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students.

T tells SS about the job they imagined having when they grow up. T asks SS to tell about things they imagined to do or to have. SS speak about imagnary situations.

PTV (8 minutes) • To help SS understand difficult words and get engage in the following exercise effectively

T hands SS handout 1 that includes 5 words that are included in the article they are going to read and their definitions to match. SS checks answers with their partners and T monitors. T shows answers on the board if necessary. T teaches income (n.) and drink-drive (v.) if necessary

Reading for gist (6 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading tasks

T shows SS the article they are going to read and the questions they are going to answer. Ss read and discuss what would be different in Egypt.

Language Clarification (14 minutes) • To highlight use of “would” in reading text. Meaning, form, pronunciation of TL

T hands SS small pieces of paper that include parts of hypothetical if structure. T asks SS to find the words n the pieces of paper in the article. T clarifies the meaning of would. T clarifies the pronunciation of would (I'd) T displays the structure on the board.

Reading for sepecific information (8 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned
