Description

In this lesson the students will be learning phrases to use with in certain social context. First we will brainstorm places where we might have social encounters and what we might say during these encounters. Then we will do a listening exercise with the audio on the computer. Then we will discuss functional phrases for social situations and finally relate back to the warm up exercise and use or new phrases in these contexts.

Main Aims

  • To provide practice of language used for of speaking in the context of in a social context

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice of language used for functional language in the context of related to social language.

Procedure

Lead in (7-8 minutes) • to introduce and generate interest in and practice social encounters and phrases

I elicit from student where they might have social encounters. Then to warm up The will role play two different scenarios in pairs. The scenarios will be provided on strips of paper. Some useful phrases will be provided on the wb.

Listening Exercise- (10-15 minutes) • to listen for the gist on the situation

Then I will pass around the worksheets and ask sts to look at the pictures at the top and guess the social situation. Then I will play the audio and have the students match the audio with the picture on the work sheet. Then we will play the audio again and have the students match it with the situations on the worksheet so they will get the gist.

Focus on the function- (10-15 minutes) • introduce functional phrases for different situations

I will introduce several functional phrases by writing them on the board and have sts categorize them as starting the convo, ending the convo, or to gain someone’s attention. I will drill the social phrases so they can practice hearing and stating the phrases in the correct situation. Then I will have them do the language focus exercise on the work sheet individually for 2-3 minutes and then with a partner for 2-3 minutes and then we will check answers. Then we will do some feedback and clarify similar phrases and certain intonations.

Speaking- (7-8 minutes) • to practice newly learned phrases in specific situations.

The last activity I will have students with with new partners and they will create their own role play situation. They will be encouraged to have 2 to 3 lines a piece and practice the role play. Then I will ask them to come in front of the class and perform the role play. Then the class will guess what situation they acting out.
