In this lesson, students practice reading and speaking skills through studying a text about culture. The leson starts with discussion what the culture is and followed by learning new vocabulary related to the topic.

Main Aims

  • To give students practice in reading for gist, specific infomation and detail in the context of defining culture.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To give students practice in speaking for fluency and expressing their opinions.


Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will write a word Culture on a board and ask students to work in pairs to think what the definition for Culture.

Pre-Reading (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Before reading, we will do some activities on a new vocabulary, so it will be easier for the students to understand the text.

While-Reading (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

I will ask the students to read the text and try to get the main idea. I will observe them by walking from one group to another.

While-Reading (10-12 minutes) • To help students to understand the text more

After reading once, I will put pictures on a board and do an activity connected to the reading in order to deeper their understanding.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

We will work on exercise connected to reading. Students will have to complete the text with the missing sentences. After we will check it as a whole class.
