Description

In this lesson, students develop the reading subskills of gist and detail through a text about "Our First Colour TV".

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about "Our First Colour TV"

Subsidiary Aims

  • To improve speaking and provide fluency in the context of technology.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

(Brainstorm + Mind map + Prediction) 1- Share the first slide of the lesson (Google slides). 2- Ask students to brainstorm and think of examples of technologies. 3- Explain the meaning technology (electronic devices) and give them an example to make sure that they understand. 4- Nominate students and ask each one of them to give two examples and write them on the mind map. 5- Discuss their examples and move to the following slide in which more examples going to be presented. 6- Tell students that " today's reading lesson will be about one of the electronic devices, could you predict about which technology the text will be?". 7- Mention that they will figure out later on if their answers are correct or not.

Pre-Reading (12-15 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

The following items from "Our First Colour Tv" text will be discussed in the pre-teaching stage according to MPF: A) Challenging Vocabulary: Matching the meaning with the picture (M) then discussing the Form (F) and read all of them together (P). 1. Busy 2. Explain 3. Colour B)The difference between live (v) and live tv (adj): 1- Ask students to try to differentiate between by grapping each on the two given examples to the correct place in the table. 2- Before discussing the differences with the teacher, students shall discuss in pairs. 3- Explain the meaning, pronunciation and form (MPF) of both of them. 4- to make sure that the Ss can differentiate between them, ask them to read the sentence "I make live videos where I live.". C) Dicussing the differences between: - Color (American English) vs Colour (British English) - Program(American English) vs Programme (British English) D) Discussing "Black & white" and ask students if we can or cannot say "white & black"? why?

While-Reading (Gist Task) (3-5 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist information reading task

After reading the text for the first time, the students are expected to be able to identify the main idea of the text by answering a multiple-choice question in Google Forms.

While-Reading #2 (6-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed reading task.

After the second reading, students are expected to find and write short answers for few questions in the detail task (Google slides).

Post-Reading (7-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

- Ask students to think about a technology that they have and try to describe. All students shall write their answers in the Google slides specified for each one of them. Then nominate each one and ask them to talk about what they write. - Giving feedback and DEC.
