Description

In this lesson, Students will have developed their ability to read for gist, specific information, and details with particular reference to ordinary people who are considered heroes by people around them.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist, scan and detailed reading practice using a text about Ordinary people who are considered heroes by people around them in the context of 3 reading texts

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of heroes

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T shows ss a picture and elicits from ss the theme of the topic. T talks with ss about her role model or ordinary people who are considered heroes by her. T elicits from ss their heroes.

Pre-Reading (Pre-teaching vocab) (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

T shows ss a picture of new vocabulary. T elicits the words from ss. T asks CCQs to check the meaning of each word (check the LA) T models 3 times. T drills (chorally and individually 3x) T writes the word on the board and highlights its part of speech.

While-Reading 1 (3-6 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Students read for the main idea and answer short questions about it. Instructions: T asks students to read quickly for 3 min. T asks students to read alone. Ask ICQs: Are you working alone? Are you reading in detail? T gives them 1 min to read the questions. After they finish reading and answering the 3 short questions alone, T asks them to check their answers in pairs.

While-Reading #2 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Students read to gain more understanding of the text and answer some specific questions. Instructions: Read again individually for 5 min and then answer some questions. Answer questions alone. After answering the questions T asks them to check their answers in pairs. T gives FB.

Post-Reading (6-8 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

T asks ss to answer more detailed questions about the 3 texts. T gives ss time to read the questions. T asks them to answer the questions alone. After reading for details and answering the questions, ss check in pairs. T gives FB.
