Description

In this lesson we will read through a text for gist and detail, covering vocabulary about the internet, business and search engines. The students will also practice their speaking skills in small groups and feedback to the whole class.

Materials

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about the internet and search engines

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy and fluency speaking practice in a small group conversations

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

4 minutes: Lead in Look at the photograph from the article and discuss what the article might be about. Split into break out rooms with a time limit. - 2 minutes. Come back together and discuss ideas with the group - 2 minutes. Useful sentence starters: I think it could be about... Maybe it's about... Perhaps the article discusses...

Pre-Reading/Listening (5-6 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible with useful vocab

6 minutes: Pre-teach vocab Group activity Can anybody tell me the meaning of this word? Explain the meaning and pronounce it. Have students repeat the word back to me. 2 minutes for each word. Words: Search engine, computer science, a cheque, billionaire

Reading for gist (7-8 minutes) • To provide students with a less challenging gist and specific information reading task

8 minutes: Gist read Read the text and match the titles to the sections. Do this on google sheets individually first - 3 minutes. Then compare answers with a partner - 2 minutes. Feed back to the class - 3 minutes.

Reading for detail (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with a more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading task

12 minutes: Detail read Read the text again and check true or false on the list - individual, 6 minutes. Group discussion (break out rooms) - 3 minutes Whole class discussion - 3 minutes

Post-Reading (13-15 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

15 minutes: Post-teach/feedback Break out room discussions - 5 minutes. What did you find interesting about the text? Would you like to start a business with your friend? Why? What do you think people did before search engines? 5/10 minutes: Whole class discussion of above questions and how they found the task. Write down students' responses as the feedback - delayed error correction.
