Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist reading practice using a text.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I start the lesson by showing two pictures, ask are they happy in the photo? Why? And after that I ask what do they have to do to be happy? I check the answers quickly without discussing.

Exposure (4-5 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

In this stage, students expose to the TL . I will give students two minutes to read a passage individually about getting fit then work in pair and share their ideas about what do we have to do to get fit then discuss it together in the class. Then I Ask CCQs to make sure students understand the point.

Clarification (3-4 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

I will write 3 sentences of the reading for students and highlight the target language then show them different forms of the target language then provide them with the pronunciation. in the end, I ask CCQs to make sure they understand the target language and elicit the new form.

Controlled Practice (3-4 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

I will give students a written practice, put them in a pair, give them 2 minutes to work together and answer the questions, then check it in the class. I will monitor during the activity and help where needed.

Free Practice (5-6 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

I will give students time to think about things they have to do in their life and write four sentences, share their sentences with their partner to check it together, then write their sentences on the virtual whiteboard and others guess who write each sentence.
