Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Project slide 17 on board. Tell ss you are going to play hangman. The sentence is a slogan regarding nature.

Exposure (3-5 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Hand out Mat-1 for students to complete in pairs. Tell them not to worry if they cannot identify some words. Also, project slide 19 on board for them to see the pictures in color. T walks around monitoring and helping and guiding. To draw students' attention to the target language, play the recording on slide 20 for ss to check answers stopping it to make the necessary clarifications.

Clarification (6-8 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Elicit the meaning of each of the 10 words from ss and ask them to use them in a sentence. Point out parts of speech Verbs ( harm, encourage, get rid of ) Adjectives ( extinct, native, endangered) Nouns ( prey, predator, pesticide) Point out possible word formation extinct- extinction harm- harmful x harmless poison -poisonous Point out the suffix --cide (meaning to kill ) pesticide, suicide, homicide, genocide Work on pronunciation by pointing out the number of syllables. Ask students to clap after you. one clap per syllable. E.g. pes-ti-cide ( clap-clap-clap) en-cou-rage ( clap-clap-clap) pre-da-tor ( clap-clap-clap) en-dan-gered ( clap-clap-clap)

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Divide the class into teams. Play the game on slides 21-33 to consolidate the understanding of the above-introduced words. You have enough questions to play it with a 24-student class.

Semi-Controlled Practice (10-12 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Step 1: Ask ss to look at Mat-2 and complete the paragraph with one of the given words in the box. Students practice using the newly-studied words in context. Project PPT slide 35 to check answer. Elict and ask to justify answers. Step':2 To end the lesson on happy note, remind student about the hangman game you played at the beginning of the lesson. Say now we are going to ... Create YOUR OWN SLOGAN! Divide class into teams . Teams write their own slogans, read them out to class. Vote on the best slogan. Step 3: ( If you have time) Have a brief whole-class debate about the ways we harm nature.
