Description

In this lesson, Ss learn about the phrasal verbs (separable and inseparable) through a guided discovery based on reading a text about text speak when using social media. The lesson begins with skim reading the article about text speak, this is then followed by CCQ's. Finally, there will be some sentence reformulation and freed practice via writing their own messages in text speak.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and scan reading practice using a text about Phrasal verbs (separable and inseparable) in the context of Text speak

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (8-10 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will write on the board the quotation - "We get to live by the modern standards of a time where we can use social media as a tool" - Gigi Hadid. The Ss will talk about the quotation for a few minutes in pairs and they can can discuss what they think it means, possible interpretations, and whether they agree or disagree.

Pre-Reading/Listening (12-15 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Followed by some vocabulary exposure of text speak - also what is text speak? Finally, a discussion in pairs about: What other words in text speak do the Ss know of and do they prefer to write in text speak or in full sentences. Classroom feedback after the discussion.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (12-15 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

The Ss will practice their reading skills of skim reading to get a gist of what the author is trying to incinerate to the reading what is the main message from the article. This will be followed by the Ss writing 4 questions about the article in page 70 and exchanging them with their partners questions.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (15-18 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

The Ss will work in a group - Imagining they are teachers themselves, who received an essay in text speak from a student. Answering the questions how they would feel? and how they would respond to the student who presented them such an assignment.

Post-Reading/Listening (10-15 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

The Ss will be able to have the opportunity to show their comprehension of text speak by translating a text speak message provided by the T into Standard English. Followed by writing their own message in text speak and then swapping their text with a partner to rewrite their partners message in Standard English.
