Description

In this lesson, students will be reviewing and practicing collocations with the word 'day.' The lesson will start with a lead-in to engage the students. Then, a text using the target language will be presented and students will complete a gist and intensive activity. Afterward, meaning, form, and pronunciation of the target language will be clarified. Last, students will participate in a controlled practice and freer (speaking) practice while actively using the target language.

Main Aims

  • To provide review and practice of collocations with the word 'day' in the context of an informal conversation.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist reading practice using a text about daily life in the context of conversation.
  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of daily activities and events.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T will share screen with Google Slide displayed. T will allow Ss to read and explore the questions. T will elicit responses from Ss.

Exposure (8 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Gist: T will move to slide displaying the text. T asks Ss to read the text and think of a one sentence summary for the conversation. T demos by highlighting one part of the text that is noticeable. T gives 1 minute to complete the activity. ICQ: Are you reading or scanning? Scanning ICQ: How much time will you have? 2 minutes T shares link. After two minutes, T asks students to share possible summaries in the chat box. OCFB: T elicits responses from students. Intenstive: T shares screen and shows Google form for intensive task. T explains that it's the same text but now Ss need to complete the spaces by selecting the most appropriate term. T models the first question. T explains that Ss have two minutes to complete the activity individually. ICQ: How much time do you have? Two minutes. T share Google Form link. After two minutes, T sends Ss to breakout rooms to check answers for two minutes. OCFB: T shares screen and asks Ss to mark correct answer using annotate tools.

Clarification (10-12 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Meaning: T shares screen with Google Slide matching activity. T explains that Ss need to match terms on top with meanings on bottom. T demos the first term. T instructs students that they will have 2 minutes to work individually and then we will check. ICQ: Is this completed individually or with a group? How much time do you have? After two minutes Ss go to breakout rooms to check answers. They will have 2 minutes OCFB: T elicits responses from each group and asks Ss to use Annotate tools to share with class. Teacher uses CCQ's as needed to clarify meanings. Form: T moves to Google Slide with graphic organizer. T explains that each term goes into a category based on the part of speech found in the term. T elicits a response from S to demo the first term. T instructs Ss to use the annotate tools to place the terms in the correct category (through text, drawing arrows, etc). T uses CCQ's to check answers. Pronunciation: T says each word one by one and Ss repeat chorally. T also selects individual Ss to repeat. T highlights linking sounds for each term. T uses CCQ's for extra clarification as needed.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

T shares screen with Google Form. T explains the task: Ss need to work individually to complete the sentence with the best option. T elicits answer from S and demos 1. T explains that Ss will have two minutes and then they will group up to compare answers. ICQ: How much time do you have? T shares link to Ss via chat After two minutes, T sends Ss to breakout rooms to compare answers. They have two minutes to complete this task. OCFB: T elicit responses from S using the annotate features on Zoom.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

T shows the last slide on the Google Slide document. T explains that Ss will need to choose questions to ask classmates. They should also anticipate responding to a variety of answers. The goal is to practice the collocations that use the word 'day.' T demos by nominating one student to ask T a question. T responds and uses the collocation 'day.' T explains that Ss will have 5 minutes. ICQ: What vocabulary words are we practicing? How much time do we have? T assigns breakout rooms. T monitors rooms. OCFB: Ss share the discussions amongst their breakout group with the class. T share DEC examples.
