Listening
Elementary level

Description

In this lesson students will practice listening as a main skill and speaking as a sub skill. Students will practice relevant vocabulary related to the topic of "Jobs" and grammar structure of “Yes/No questions”. The lesson will begin by a lead-in through a mentimeter activity where Ss will submit 3 of the jobs they learned in the last lesson and will from a word cloud. Next, the teacher will explain 3 new words or what we call "blockers" in order to facilitate the listening process for the students. Then Ss will do a listening activity in which they will first underline the questions used in the listening text and will put a tick/cross during second listening. Ss will do the ticking/crossing for the second part of the listening activity as well. As post-listening activity, Ss will be asked to talk about the information gathered from the listening text and the teacher will ask if they can guess the jobs. Finally, Ss will practice speaking skill in a group activity where they will be given job cards by the teacher and will ask each other yes/no questions to guess the job.

Materials

Abc Whiteboard
Abc Students´ book
Abc Job cards

Main Aims

  • First Ss will be listening for specific information by underlining the questions asked and then they will do detailed listening by ticking/crossing the correct boxes as they listen.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice of present simple tense, yes/no questions in the context of talking about jobs via a speaking group activity

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Teacher will show the QR code for mentimeter and ask Ss to enter 3 jobs each. This is both a revision of the previous lesson and a lead-in for the listening activity which is also about professions/

Pre-Reading/Listening (6-9 minutes) • To unblock key lexis needed to help students understand the audio.

The teacher will try to elicit the words "public, qualification and depend" from the students, if they cannot she will provide the words. Then the Ss will drill the words chorally and individually. Finally the teacher wiil write words on the board.

While-Reading/Listening (15-20 minutes) • To provide students with a less challenging specific information listening task

Teacher will ask Ss to open their books and look at the list of questions. She will tell them that they will listen to a game show and will ask them to underline the questions asked to Alex. After checking the answers with the whole class, Ss will listen again, this time putting a tick for yes and a cross for no and the letter D for "it depends" asnwers. Again answers will be checked with the whole class. The second part of the activity will be repeated for Sue`s answers. Finally the teacher will ask the Ss "What do we know about Alex?". Ss will make sentences using the information and will try to guess Alex`s job. Same will be repeated for Sue. As the last activity, Ss will listen the next text to see if they guessed their jobs correctly.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

The teacher will give each student a card with a job written on it. In groups of four, Ss will ask each other questions to find what job they do. This way they will have practiced job vocabulary and yes/no questions in present simple tense. Teacher will walk around the class listening to the Ss and checking whether they use the target language correcdtly or not. If necessary, delayed feedback will be provided at the end of the activity.
