Materials

Main Aims

  • To give sts practice skimming and scanning and reading for detail in the context of an article about names.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To review some common collocations e.g. make decision. To give sts freer speaking practice.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T greets sts and asks them to look at the picture on the board. Sts decide what name they would give the baby girl in the picture. They then talk about how their parents chose their names. T asks groups to report back to the class on any unusual stories they heard about how they got their names.

Pre-Reading (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

T writes some Turkish names on the board and asks sts to guess who they are why they changed their real names. T shows some celebrity photographs and elicits from the class who they are and why they are famous.

While-Reading #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

T asks sts to read the text and find out what these famous people have in common. Sts discuss their answers with their partners. T checks the answers with the class.

While-Reading #2 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Sts work in groups to mark the reasons with a tick or cross acc. to whether they appear in the article or not. T checks the answers with the class.

Post-Reading/Listening (5-8 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Sts complete the sentences individually with the words from the text. Sts compare their answers in pairs before checking with the class. Sts ask each other about the items in Ex.1 and report back to the class. (This part can be skipped if there isn't enough time.)
