Description

In this lesson, students are introduced to the use of past simple to talk about what we did over the weekend. Listening activities and a test-teach-test lesson expose them to some past simple verb forms and questions.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Weekend activities - On the weekend, I usually... Last weekend, I ... watched Strictly Come Dancing read a book washed the clothes went shopping

Test #1 (8-10 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the target language

Listening activity - SQA Academy Nat'l 2 - Past simple 1 Question 3 - Jim's weekend Play the recording and give students the exercise to fill in. Checking questions - When did this happen? In the past. Expect it to be difficult. Play it a second time and ask them to correct their work.

Teach (15-20 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in the first test stage

Grammar presentation - past simple Timeline - past actions that are complete Be Go Do Regular verbs Irregular verbs

Test #2 (8-10 minutes) • Check students' use of the target language again and compare with the first test

Play the recording about Ann's weekend and ask students to fill in the blanks with the appropriate past tense verbs.

Free practice (13-15 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

In pairs, practice asking and answering questions about each other's weekend.
