Main Aims

  • Helping students listen and read for gist and for details in the context of a text on diets and an interview on diets.

Subsidiary Aims

  • Giving students talking practice in the context of expressing their opinions about dieting.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Write the word DIET in the middle of the WB. Then ask the students some relevant questions: 1. Is anyone on a diet? 2. What kind of diet are you on? 3. What are the most favorite food fads/fad diets in Turkey nowadays? 4. Do you know someone who's always on a diet?

Pre-Reading/Listening (3-5 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

1. Put the students in two groups. 2. Draw a Fattening/Non-fattening food chart on the WB. 3. Tell the students that they are going to put some food cards in the chart. 4. Ask them, " Are you going to write anything in the chart?" 5. Put them into two groups and give half of the cards to each. 6. Ask them to do the activity and then check their answers.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (5-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

1. Give the students a reading text HO including a series of items in the beginning. 2. Ask the students to read the given items a) to f). 3. Ask them to scan the text and in pairs, match the items with the different parts of the text. 4. Ask each pair to check their answers with other pairs.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (15-20 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

1.Ask the students to listen to the listening text twice and say for what occasion each person dieted. 2. Give them the listening HO and ask them to fill in the chart while listening to the text in chunks. 3. Ask them to check the answers in pairs. 4. Ask them which of the diets in the reading text are similar to the diets Sam and Catherine followed.

Post-Reading/Listening (3-5 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Ask the students which of the diets in the reading text are the hardest to follow and why?
