Description

In this lesson, students practice receptive reading skills through reading an interview with a celebrity. The lesson starts with a lead-in prompt to catch the students' attention. Second, the pre-reading stage in which the meaning, form, and pronunciation of some vocabulary words are reviewed. Third, the text is read and analyzed one time for a general (gist) meaning and. Fourtht, the text is read again with the intention of identifying more details. An activity accompanies the reading. Last, the post-reading stage is carried out through a speaking activity. The lesson finishes with a time for delayed error correction to analyze language errors that occurred throughout the lesson.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about the actor Ewan McGregor in the context of an interview.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To give student the opportunity to practice the meaning, form, and pronunciation of vocabulary words related to film and theatre.
  • To provide students with the opportunity to practice conversational speaking skills in the context of celebrity interviews.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T shares the screen and shows the Google Slides presentation to introduce the topic. T mentions picture and asks the question, "What is happening in the picture?" T nominates different Ss to answer the question. As the Ss respond, T writes answers on the screen.

Pre-Reading/Listening (6 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

T tells students "Now we are going to review some vocabulary words." T goes to Slide 2 to introduce MEANING task. T says "We have four vocabulary words that are phrasal verbs. We need to match each term with the picture." T nominates one S to demonstrate one term. T instructs Ss that they have 30 seconds to complete this task. T shares link with students via chat box and assigns each student a different slide. OCFB - After 30 seconds T nominates Ss to share answers with the class. T removes blue rectangle on model slide to reveal the FORM task - categorizing each phrasal verb by tense. T says "Now we need to identify the tense of each term as it is written now - past, present, or both." T nominates one S to demo the first term with the group. T instructs Ss that they can continue to write on their own slide. T also mentions to think about pronunciation of each word as Ss complete this activity. T instructs that Ss have 30 seconds to complete this task. ICQ: Where are you writing the tense? Answer: On your own slide. OCFB - After 30 seconds T nominates individual Ss to check answers. T moves to different Ss slides as this occurs. PRONUNCIATION: T says each word and Ss repeat. T asks if there are any questions.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (6 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

T introduces gist task: "Now we are going to read an interview with the actor Ewan McGregor. He has acted in films such as Star Wars." T shares screen of Google Form. T gives instructions. "Read the interview quickly to gather general information. You will have three minutes to read the interview and answer the questions on the Google Form." T asks ICQ's: "Are you reading for general or detailed information?"(General) How much time do you have? (3 minutes). T shares Google Form link with students. T turns off video and stops sharing screen. After three minutes, T turns video back on and shares screen once again. T instructs Ss to write answers in chat box to share with classmates. OCFB: After Ss write answers, T goes through Google Form and elicits responses from individual students.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (12 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

T shares screen with new Google Form. T explains detailed reading task: "Now we are going to read the text for a second time. This time we are reading for detailed information. Read the text and determine if each statement is true or false." You have five minutes to complete this activity." ICQ: Are you reading for general or detailed information? (Detailed) How much time do you have to complete this activity? (5 minutes). T sends Google Forms link via chat and allows students to begin. T stops sharing, turns off camera. After 5 minutes, T turns on camera and says, "We will now check and discuss answers with classmates in breakout rooms." You will have 3 minutes. T creates breakout rooms and sets time (3 minutes). T monitors breakout rooms. OCFB: After three minutes, T shares screen of Google Form and nominates Ss from each group to answer questions. If time allows, T ask Ss to elaborate and share why they chose that option. T asks if there are any questions.

Post-Reading/Listening (10-15 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

T shares screen of Google Slides with speaking prompt. T says, "Now, for our final task we are going to discuss with classmates the following question." Pause and allow them to read question. You will have 5 minutes in breakout rooms to discuss this. ICQ: Are you describing your favorite actor or making a list of questions and answers to ask him/her? (Make a list of questions and answers). How much time do you have? (5 minutes). T writes question in chat box and sends students to breakout rooms. T monitors breakout rooms and sets time for 5 minutes. T writes down errors to review. T nominates 1 student from every breakout room to share questions they created. T shares screen of Google Slides and reviews DEC.
