Main Aims

  • To provide product writing practice of a essay in the context of things we want.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To have Ss practice reading skills and to possibly learn new vocabulary.

Procedure

Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will ask Ss what is something they always really wanted as a child and then share an anecdote about how I always wanted a dog growing up. This will help set the context of the lesson.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

Ss will have to read a short passage. The passage is: Dear Santa, It would be really awesome if I got a dog for Christmas! I will play with the dog and take it on a lot of walks. I believe the dog will be very happy with us! I understand it is a lot of responsibility, but I think I am ready for the challenge! Ss will have to answer the questions: What is the purpose of each sentence? What parts do you think are formal and informal? What is the purpose of the letter as a whole? Ss will work in pairs to answer the questions.

Useful Language (4-5 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

I will highlight four words in the example I have and provide some language analysis for the Ss. I will mainly be looking for Ss to provide me with synonyms for these words. The words are: awesome, believe, responsibility, and challenge.

Productive Task(s) (18-20 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Ss will have to produce their own letter / email attempting to persuade someone to give them something they want. In their letter, Ss will have to include: what they want, why they want it, and why they maybe shouldn't have it. Ss will be encouraged to keep their writing between 50-75 words. Ss will have a maximum of 10 minutes to complete this section. After the Ss have completed their work, they will peer review each others work according to the IELTS writing checklist. Ss will only be looking for spelling errors, grammar mistakes, and that it is persuasive. Ss will have a maximum of 10 minutes to complete this section. If time allows, I will have Ss produce another written sample on the same topic.

Feedback and Error Correction (3-4 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

I will perform any DEC needed and cover any errors potentially not caught when Ss edited each others writing.
