Description

In this lesson, students learn about the Past Simple Tense (Regular Form) through guided discovery based on a reading text about Pablo Picasso. The class starts by discussing one of his famous paints, Guernica. This is followed by comprehension questions that carry the language that you to teah. Then, the teacher highlight the target language by asking about the form of the target language.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of the regular for of the past simple

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in conversations and discussions in the context of ‎Picasso's theme.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (1-1 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

 show a picture of Picasso’s most famous painting for 20 seconds; ‎  ask SS to work in pairs and discuss the picture for two minutes;‎  get some feedback from the SS.‎

Exposure (1-2 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

 ask SS to read first the sentences in worksheet No. 2 (a “True ‎or False” exercise);‎  ask SS to read the text in worksheet No. 1, (the reading ‎passage); ‎

Highlighting (1-2 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

 ask SS to answer individually question No. 2; ‎  ask SS to do a peer check; ‎  get some feedback from the SS.‎

Clarification (2-4 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Use some of the answers to draw the SS’ attention to:‎ ‎1.‎ The regular form of the target language (Subject + V. + ed ‎ending).‎ ‎2.‎ The function of the target language (what it means).‎ 3. ‎ Explicate three different pronunciations of the ‘ed’ ending of ‎regular verbs in the simple past tense: / Id /, / t / or / d /.‎

Controlled Practice (1-2 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

 ask the SS to do the activity of worksheet No. 3; ‎  ask SS to do a peer check; ‎  get some feedback from the SS.‎

Semi-Controlled Practice (1-2 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

 ask SS to do the activity of worksheet No. 4;  ask SS to do a peer check; ‎  get some feedback from the SS.‎

Free Practice (1-2 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

 divide the SS into pairs of A and B; ‎  using the Picasso theme once more, ask the SS to enter into ‎imaginative roles; ‎  get some feedback from the SS.‎
