Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluent speaking practice in the use of formal and informal requests.

Procedure

Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To set the lesson context engaging students to it.

I will show students 4 photos with different context( tell me the time, make me a sandwich, close the window for me and pass me the mobile phone) teacher asks students to look at the photos and think about possible questions to request all these things in a polite way, teacher asks students go to breakout rooms and work for 3 minutes with a peer. Teacher nominates one student to share his/her answer in the main room.

Highlighting (10-12 minutes) • To draw students attention to the target language.

Teacher presents a listening task, teacher thinks that is just necessary to work with 2 conversations from the 4 that the audio has. Teacher sends a link from google forms and asks students to read the questions first, plays the audio for the first time and if it's necessary for the second time. Students answer the questions, so that they can finally compare their answers in BORs. Students will be then introduced to another listening task, teacher sends a link of another google forms, this time students have to complete the blanks with the correct words, they have to fill out 6 sentences. Teacher nominates some students to provide their answers in the main room.

Clarification (7-8 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form, pronunciation and appropriacy of the target language.

Teacher get some requests from the context that was previous presented and goes through meaning and apropriacy. For pronunciation teacher shows a slide in power point and get 4 formal request, asks students to listen intonation and stress words, then asks them to repeat it, teacher nominates 4 students to pronounce each request. For form, teacher the same requests and asks students to analize the structure, hopefully students realise by themselves the grammatical structure.

Language practice (8-10 minutes) • To introduce exercises to have students get used to the functional language.

Teacher presents photos of different contexts and asks students to create requests and respond to them, teacher clarify that they have to decide whether to use formal or informal requests depending on the situation, teacher separates Ss in BORs, teacher monitors every room and asks Ss tu change rols. Teacher nominates 3 students to share their answers in the main room.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To create a Roll play using the target language

Teacher divides the class in two or three groups and presents to them 3 different situations, the first one in a restaurant, the second one for booking a hotel and finally buying online. Teacher gives clear instructions and checks comprehension, teacher monitors each BORs and take notes of some mistakes related to the target language.
