Description

In this lesson, students will listen to an audio recording of two people discussing New Year's celebrations in their countries. After analyzing the recording students will discuss celebrations in their countries.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and specific information listening practice using an audio recording about comparing celebrations in two countries.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of vocabulary related to food in the context of celebrations.
  • To provide speaking practice in an informal setting in the context of New Year's celebrations.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T shares screen and accesses Jamboard link with the question written "What is your favorite celebration?" T asks the question one SS to respond respond As SS respond, T writes answers on whiteboard T explains "You will have 2 minutes to discuss this question with two-three of your classmates. We will be in breakout rooms.” T asks ICQ: How many minutes do you have to discuss the question? (2 minutes) T creates breakout rooms and sets time (2 minutes). T monitors breakout rooms. After two minutes, the group returns together and the teacher nominates 2-3 SS to share answers. Teacher writes down responses as students talk.

Pre-Reading/Listening (6-7 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Meaning: T tells SS we're going to review four vocabulary words T shares model slide with jumbled words and definitions T explains that we need to match up words and definitions; selects S to demo first word and definition T shares link with the class and instructs students to work individually for 2 minutes After two minutes, T goes through each term and definition with group, nominating SS to share answers using annotate feature Form and Pronunciation: T moves onto slide that has "countable vs. uncountable" text T nominates SS to share definition of a countable and uncountable noun T gives SS one minute to determine if each term is countable or uncountable and to determine where stress is for each word After one minute, T nominates SS to share answers for form using annotate tools on Zoom After determining countable vs. uncountable nouns for each term T has students repeat each vocabulary term

While-Reading/Listening #1 (5-6 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

T tells Ss that we will listen to a recording of two people from different countries comparing one celebration. While listening to the clip, pay attention to general information. ICQ: How many celebrations are they describing? After the clip, share the screen with the written gist questions from the Google Jamboard. Give students 30 seconds to think of answers individually. Ss discuss questions in breakout rooms for two minutes. T monitors breakout rooms. OCFB - Nominate Ss to share answers and reveal on the screen

While-Reading/Listening #2 (10-15 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

T explains that we will listen to same audio recording, but this time we need to listen for more details and complete a chart. ICQ: Are we listening for general or detailed information? Share screen and go to model slide on Google Jamboard. Assign slides to students and allow them to preview and fill out chart while listening to recording. T plays audio again. T instructs SSto complete chart and discuss answers in breakout rooms for five minutes. T monitors breakout rooms T will monitor and determine if audio needs to be replayed OCFB - T nominates one Ss from each group to complete a row of table. Teacher fills out row on screen for everyone to see answer.

Post-Reading/Listening (15-20 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

T will share screen with Google Jamboard. Screen will show slide with post-listening discussion questions. T will read questions to group and divide SS into breakout rooms to discuss questions. T will set timer for five minutes. T will monitor breakout rooms. The group comes together and T nominates one Ss into each group to share responses. DEC with Blank Google Jamboard slide
