Materials

Abc TP 6 Slideshow
Abc Task 1
Abc Task 2

Main Aims

  • To introduce and practice different ways of comparing nouns.

Subsidiary Aims

  • For Ss to practice their speaking and listening skills in the context of comparing cats and dogs.

Procedure

Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will ask Ss if they have any pets and ask them to briefly describe them for me. I will start off by describing my dog Gypsy and using some of the language we will be looking at.

Text-Work (6-7 minutes) • A reading task that will expose the Ss to the target language we are looking at

Ss will be given the text with several phrases highlighted in red, all of which compare nouns. Ss will be asked to organize the phrases based on how much of a difference they show: no difference, small difference, or big difference. (5 mins) We will check our answers together as a class. (1-2 mins)

Language Clarification (6-7 minutes) • To cover MFPA for the grammatical structures we will be learning in the lesson.

The language clarification will be more of a guided discovery, as Ss will be given 5 different questions where they will have to find the meaning of the sentence themselves from two to three different choices (1-2 mins). After Ss have correctly discovered the meaning of the grammar, we will cover the form and pronunciation of said structures (5 mins).

Controlled Practice (8-9 minutes) • To give the Ss the chance to practice with the target language in a controlled context

Ss will be given a paragraph that compares cats and dogs together, but there will be some gaps that they have to fill in. If there are four or more Ss, I will put them in pairs and have them work together, if there are three or less I will just have them all work together to complete the task (5-6 mins). I will go over the answers with the Ss and perform any feedback necessary (3 mins).

Free practice (14-15 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Ss will be asked to think of ways they would compare dogs and cats to each other, and have to share their thoughts with other Ss. If there are 4 or more Ss they will work in pairs, if there are 3 or less than they will all work together. After they have shared, the Ss will be asked to say if they agree or disagree with what their partner(s) said (9-10 mins). After the Ss have finished this portion of the task, I will perform any DEC needed (5 mins).
