Teaching Practice 6
Elementary level

Description

In this lesson, the students will learn about functional language to ask about the news and respond in the context of a conversation about news. First, students will mention some recent news from their respective countries. Then, they will do a gist task based on a listening text, to then highlight the TL through another text-based task. After clarifying Meaning and Form through a short Guided Discovery form and practicing Pronunciation, the students will do a Controlled Practice through a fill-in-the-gap task in Google Forms. Finally, a Productive Task where they will talk about the news in pairs and DEC to end.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of language used for talking (asking and reacting) about the news

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist listening practice using a text about casual conversations about the news
  • To provide intensive listening practice using a text about casual conversations about the news
  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of the news

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students with the subject

The teacher will show a picture of the recent announcement that Rihanna is going to be the performer at the Superbowl Halftime Show. Then, they will proceed to ask the students if there is any recent big news in their countries. If no student volunteers, the teacher will nominate 2 or 3 students.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

The students will listen to 4 different conversations where one speaker is going to be mentioning some news they heard. After listening for the first time, they will mention which news story is each conversation about, as a gist task. Then, students will listen for a second time and they will have to match the dialogue of the first speaker with the dialogue of the second one reacting to what the first one said. They will do this task through Google Slides individually and then compare answers in pairs, to finally check their answers with the answer key the teacher will provide.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

For the clarification stage, the students will complete a short Guided Discovery questionnaire about Meaning and Form. Then, they will check their answers in pairs. The teacher will check some answers by elicitation and then show the answer key (& Summary handout); following that with pronunciation and stress elicitation, and choral and individual drilling.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

The teacher will provide the students with three different conversations with gaps the students will need to fill. It will be a multiple-choice task and in the last question, they will be able to choose a phrase from all the ones learned. Then, students will check their answers in pairs and check their answers with the teacher's Answer Key in the OCFB.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

For the Freer Practice, the students will be presented with 6 headlines and some information about the news article. They will have to talk in pairs about the headlines (2 or 3 each) and ask each other for more information. The task will be scaffolded. They will have 5 minutes to speak with each other. Finally, there will be some OCFB and DEC to end.
