Main Aims

  • By the end of this lesson, students will have reviewed the Past Simple tense and been introduce to the MPF of some new regular and irregular verbs in the context of their morning routine.

Subsidiary Aims

  • By the end of this lesson, students will be better able to scan a text in the context of morning routines

Procedure

Lead-in (5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Instructions: 1. Tell sts what you did after work last night 2. Discuss in pairs what you did after school yesterday 3. 3 mins 4. Feedback from 3 pairs

Exposure (10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text

1. This paragraph is about what I do in the morning before work 2. Read and circle all 14 verbs. 3. Then, answer question 2 and complete the rule for question 3 5. Alone 4. 6 mins ICQ: 1. Are you reading quickly or slowly? 2. How many verbs? 3. How many questions are you answering? Pair check then O/C feedback to see where pronunciation is weak

Clarification (10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Instructions: 1. Elicit from students: what did we notice about some verbs? Did they follow the rules? Are they still in the past simple tense? Are they regular or irregular? 2. M/P/F as seen on LA sheet

Controlled Practice (8 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

1. Complete the 9 sentences about your morning routine using the past simple verbs 2. The infinitive verbs are next to the sentence to give you a clue 3. 7 minutes ICQ: 1. What tense? 2. Are the words regular or irregular? 3. Where can you find a clue for the irregular verb? Pair check then show answers OHW

Free Practice (12 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

1. Take turns to interview your partner about what they did over the weekend. 2. Use your imagination 3. Some suggestions to talk about: when did you wake up? what did you eat? did you go anywhere? Did you see some friends/family/anything interesting? 4. C/O: Take notes of what your partner did and decide who had the most interesting weekend because you will be telling the class what they did and why it was interesting. 5. 10minutes ICQ: Are you talking to your partners about what you will do next weekend or what you did last weekend?
